Improve ventilation in your basement

Improve ventilation in your basement - Get rid of the "basement smell". We don't spend much time in our unfinished basements, but unfortunately, the ventilation there is often inadequate. When we switch to district heating or geothermal heating, the chimney no longer functions as a natural "lung" for the house, which can lead to poor air quality and a characteristic "basement smell".

Poor ventilation in the basement can be a problem in older renovated houses where there are no ventilation requirements. To improve ventilation, you need to ensure that enough fresh air enters all rooms except the kitchen and bathroom, and that the used air is extracted from the house.

If your house has natural ventilation (self-draft), it's important to have a functional bathroom fan running constantly to replace used air with fresh air. Sometimes, it may also be necessary to increase the airflow out of the basement floor by installing an exhaust fan in the foundation, for example, in an existing vent.

It is also important to ensure an even and balanced airflow into and out of the house to achieve a better indoor climate. By supplementing the ventilation with a circulation system in the house, you can get rid of the unwanted "basement smell" and improve the air quality in your basement.
