Check your ventilation – How to ensure a good indoor climate

Having well-functioning ventilation is crucial for keeping the air in your home fresh and free from moisture and unpleasant odors. By regularly checking your ventilation, you can prevent problems and create a better indoor climate. Here's what you can do to ensure your ventilation is working as it should.

Signs of poor ventilation

  • The air feels stuffy or stale.
  • Food particles and smells linger longer than normal.
  • The fog on the bathroom mirror does not disappear within 15 minutes after a shower.
  • Condensation is forming on the inside of the windows.
  • Laundry dries slowly and smells musty.
If you experience any of these problems, it might be time to check and possibly improve your ventilation.

How to Check Your Ventilation in 7 Easy Steps

1

Test the airflow with a sheet of paper

Hold a piece of paper against an exhaust vent – if it sticks, the ventilation is working. At a fresh air vent, the paper should be blown away. If this does not happen, the vent may be blocked or broken and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

2

Count your fresh air vents

There should be one fresh air vent per 25 square meters of living space, especially in bedrooms and living rooms where the air should be cleanest. If you lack vents, you may need to install more to improve airflow.

3

Check exhaust vents in kitchen and wet rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms need exhaust vents or mechanical fans to ventilate humid air. If these are missing, it may be appropriate to install an exhaust fan.

4

Is cooking odor spreading in the house?

Lingering food odors or odors that spread throughout the home can be a sign of inadequate ventilation. Check that the range hood is working and that the filters are clean.

5

Lingering fog on the bathroom mirror

After a shower, the mist on the bathroom mirror should disappear within 15 minutes. If it remains longer, it may indicate insufficient exhaust ventilation. A bathroom fan could be a solution.

6

Condensation on the inside of the windows

If you see condensation on the inside of the windows, it may indicate that humid air is not being vented out sufficiently. Check your fresh air vents and consider increasing the airflow.

7

Laundry and towels are slow to dry

If your laundry is drying slowly or smells musty, it may be due to high humidity and poor ventilation. An extractor fan in the laundry room or a dehumidifier can help improve the situation.

How often does the ventilation need to be checked?

Regular maintenance of your ventilation is important to maintain good air quality. Vents and filters should be cleaned at least twice a year to ensure optimal airflow.
